About Me

I am a human geographer specializing in migration, feminist political economy, and precarious work. I hold a PhD in Geography from the University of British Columbia and am currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography and Environment at the University of Lethbridge. From 2021-2023 I was a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) funded postdoctoral research fellow at the Centre for Refugee Studies at York University in Toronto, Canada.

I am the principal investigator on a SSHRC Insight Development Grant (2023-2025) titled
Slaughterhouse geographies: Comparing the integration experiences of refugee workers in Canadian
meatpacking towns. This research addresses the intentional geographies of the Canadian meatpacking industry and the lives of former refugees, now Canadian permanent residents, who do this precarious work. This project builds on my postdoctoral research, also funded by SSHRC, which worked with community partners to examine the conditions of work facing immigrant, migrant and refugee workers in Alberta’s meatpacking industry. This research has been published in a special issue of in Canadian Ethnic Studies and in Refuge.

I also have a book under contract with McGill-Queen’s University Press for inclusion in their Refugee
and Forced Migration series. The book is based on ethnographic fieldwork with former refugee women
from Syria living in a mini-enclave in a marginalized neighbourhood in Calgary. Some of this research
has also been published in the Canadian Journal of Urban Research and the Journal of Contemporary
Ethnography.

In my teaching practice, I leverage my extensive experience working with community organizations
and grassroots groups to engage students in a positive and supportive learning environment. I have
worked closely with community organizations in Alberta, including social justice organizations
ActionDignity and the Women’s Centre, to develop and deliver public education programs related to
critical policy issues. I have also worked as a facilitator and convener for a variety of community-based
research projects.
